William Saroyan (1908–1981) was an American novelist and playwright of Armenian descent.
He is considered one of the outstanding writers of the 20th century, alongside the likes of Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Erskine Caldwell, John Steinbeck, and J.D. Salinger.
Early Life and Heritage
Saroyan was born in the Armenian city of Bitlis, which is now located in modern-day Turkey.
His parents, seeking to escape the Armenian Genocide in 1915, immigrated to the United States and settled in Fresno, California.
